We had a great meeting on March 12. Our speakers were Representative Phil Williams (HD6, pictured left) and Senator Arthur Orr (SD3).

Senator Orr spoke about the need to reform state employee compensation and retirement. He says he is concerned about the huge liabilities the state retirement system is accruing and has called for an audit of the system. Without reform, it is unlikely that state retirees will get any more cost of living increases, or worse. Arthur also talked about ongoing efforts for immigration reform. He said North Alabama senators are active in the effort. Arthur is also working to revise the state constitution to remove racist language. In the past, this reform has failed because it was linked to tax issues.

Representative Williams urged us to use this time to recruit and grow the TVRC and the party. Phil talked about using e-verify to discourage illegal immigration. He noted a problem with the system is that it can only be used after hiring. He is working on an alternative. Phil is also pushing charter schools for Alabama. He says everyone is for them except the AEA.

We had a long question and answer period in which Senator Bill Holtzclaw and Representative Mike Ball also participated.
