What You Missed if You Did Not Attend the January TVRC Meeting

At our January meeting state Senator Bill Holtzclaw gave us a preview of the 2012 legislative session which opens on Febraury 7. Bill noted that there are big holes in the education and general fund budgets. He characterized this as a spending problem, but not one that can be fixed by raising taxes. Bill wants to reduce budget earmarking to give the state more flexibility in spending priorities. He said he was not a fan of charter schools, but he is for removing restrictions to give government schools the flexibility of charter schools. Bill continues his strong support for the immigration reform law that was enacted last year. You can see the immigration letter Bill wrote and 11 of his senate colleagues signed. You can also view it and his newsletter at his webpage, http://www.district2.us/. Bill will reactivate his blog when the legislature convenes. Sometimes he blogs from the floor of the senate.

What You Missed if You Did Not Attend the December TVRC Meeting

Our December speakers included several candidates in the GOP primary and Congressman Mo Brooks (R, AL5). Pictured above from the left are Patty Demos, Troy Trulock, Stave Haraway, and Mo Brooks.
Patty Demos is is running for probate judge. She thinks the job requires an attorney and wonders why the incumbent delegates the honor of conducting marriage cermonies to his subordinates.
Troy Trulock is running for Mayor of Madison. This non partisn election will be in August.
Steve Haraway is running for district 2 on the Madison County Commission. He is in his second term on the Madison city council.
Other candidates who attended were David Vess and Phil Vandiver (both running for district 4 on the Madison County Commission), Gerald Clark and Tom Butler (both running for district 2 on the Madison County Commission), Don Rizzardi (running for Madsion County district court place 3), and Chris Comer (running for Madison County circuit court place 6).
Mo Brooks is also a candidate for a second term, but as our incumbent congressman he is pretty busy on the front line in Washington, DC - the very best way to campaign. Mo knows the debt crisis is not a coming thing, it is here and we need action now.
We have a system that increasingly taxes work and subsidizes nonwork. Milton Friedman

What You Missed if You Did Not Attend the November TVRC Meeting

Our November speakers were Joe Demos (pictured left), Linda Coats, and Dale Strong.
Joe gave us an update on the affordable insurance commission to which he was appointed by Governor Bentley. The governor was prompted by this spring's plague of tornados and the chonric problem of Gulf coast hurricanes. Joe says the commission is transitioning from a listening phase to an education phase. He wants to learn about what has worked and what has not worked and about the role of building codes and other means of risk mititgation.
Linda Coats is running for the GOP nomination for Place 3 on the Madison County District Court. She has over twenty years experience in our courts, especially with the child welfare cases that are such a large and important part of the district court's case load. In addition to serving children, Linda has also been serving the Republican party. She has been president of the Twickenham Republican Women and served on the executive committee of the Alabama Federation of Republican Women. Linda is a member of the Madison County Republican Executive Committee.
In his 16 years on the Madison County Commission Dale Strong has seen the county and the GOP grow. Dale says there are significant differences between the parties and that the Democrats have stopped much needed reform in time management and overtime, billing, and featherbedding. Dale said he pushed for an audit of beneficiaries receiving health care paid by the county. He found 177 who were not eligible and saved the county $600 thousand. He said 13 months ago the county privatized feeding operations at the jail and saved $330 thousand. Dale wants to move the county to a unit system, a system that is working well for 56 other counties in Alabama. Dale will make a great chairman.
